You're missing the point of this thread a bit I think. It's not about how big a let down the game is or if it met your expectations or what have you....
Try reading a bit of the topic. I think you'd then see that the quality of the game is not the main focus of discussion here.

Yes concon777, the topic it hand is about games magazines apparently treating it's customers like idiots and betraying their trust whilst charging £4-5 for the pleasure.

Not to put to fine a point on it. Wink

And I would love for somehow that DRIV3R goes back into development. Wishful thinking I know but come on!!! I have anticipated this game for 4 years and all of Atari's wrong doings and all the hype and delays. We the Driver fans deserve justice along with the possible/obvious shady mags telling us it is great.

I am trying so hard to enjoy this game but when you get out of the car and a crew of baddies POP-UP out of nowhere and kill you because your sitting there fumbling with your controller trying to get Tanner to move Crying or Very sad Sad How frustrating Evil or Very Mad

It makes me think Atari told Reflections to throw in certain GTAish elements near end of development. You know, the we own you do it routine.

I love this franchise, along with Stuntman and I have dreams of the wrong code being submitted for duplication or some huge patch for the XBOX at least. All practically unfeasible, but with such consumer backlash slightly comprehendible.

*edit*
DRIV3R hits retail with 2.5 million copys.

Atari's press release

1up take

Shocked 2.5 Million copies already! It's possible that it will reach 10 million marks…

2.5 Mill' havn't yet been sold, simply how many shipped worldwide.
Tho' I don't doubt they'll sell that. We had an initial stock of 135, and the majority have sold already. Relase date isn't till... today!

From XboxGamer news section concerning Driv3r

Quote:
Def reviewed next month. We could have reviewed it this month but for reason's we'd probably be sacked for telling you had to not review instead. One day we're going to write a book about the ganes industry - Then they'll all be sorry.

The thing is, Atari will get away with all of it because casual gamers basically show no initiative. If they see a sticker on the case saying 9/10, or read an obviously biased (lightly speaking) review that gives it 9/10 and sees nothing wrong, they'll buy the game being none thewiser to what is happening on the internet.

No matter what we do the game will sell like hotcakes because of these shady reviews.

I was thinking about this on my paper round, and it seems suspicious that Atari are staking pretty much their whole business on this one game, and that it gets reviews that imply the game is absolutely flawless. Lest we not forget the week early release. It has never been done with any other game that I know of, so why Driv3r?

Please. If any sequal is made then Atari will be forced to create a driver4 thread on their website.

That sort of self inflicted pain is something no one alive needs.

Not necessarily. Do you see all the other companies giving away information on all their games? What are they going to say?

Sorry, skipped to the last page from page 18, hope I didn't miss much.

I hardly post here on GR, but this topic got me going. I just want to get a few facts out into the world... (I'm a games developer BTW)

1) Sending out unfinished review code is normal, we all tell the magazines the bugs we know of, what we're fixing and what's staying in. The magazines usual take what we say with a pinch of salt as they know that we can't do much in the final two or three weeks of development (even though I've witnessed 'turd like' games suddenly all come together in the final few days and become brilliant due to a few code, design or art changes)

2) I've seen lots of underhand tactics when it comes to games reviews. One of the games I worked on got a bad score on a leading game website, 2 hours and one phone call from our publisher later, the score goes up 2 whole points! I've seen magazines told that unless they review one of our games very favourably, they will never recieve review code from us again... we got a good review.

3) Driv3r is sh*t

4) I haven't bought a games mag for about 2 years, thank you internet!

So I'm unsure what exactly happened with the driv3r reviews, maybe the answers are on pages 19-30 which I will read later. Don't be alarmed by anything that goes on, it's nothing new, this has been going on for many many years, but I've NEVER witnessed lies and deception on this scale before (apart from the british government - but thats another post in another forum Wink)
