Heated debate often is. Although I'd contend that libel legality is an utter minefield. Perhaps someone should grow some balls and ride this one out?

Let's reiterate shall we?

The allegation is this:

Atari publish an unfinished game to market and then use their influence to affect the review scores in certain magazines owned by Future.

Why?

It is also highly libellous. Apparently.

Hang on...we're not the ones score fixing are we? We just want to be told the truth.

If its so worrying for them why not send a rep from the magazine into this thread to explain their position. Surely by deleting the thread they're confirming what we basically know...

I think that the only reason this thread hasn't been deleted so far, is that Future are fearing the reaction it would cause. Could be wrong though.....

Shall we start using the word 'allegedly' in every sentence from now on?

Deleting it would only serve to prove what we already know, I wander if this thread will make it in to the Forum bit in XBW next month.

Funnily enough, my suggestion to Mike over PM was that he should go through the thread, adding the word "allegedly" to the end of every post. Very Happy

I suspect you're right. Anyway, should it be deleted I've got it saved to hard disk now, and will mirror it on my website if necessary.

(Incidentally, it's also obviously bullshit for Future's management to say that the other thread had to be deleted as it was libellous. Clearly, all that would be necessary would be to delete/edit the individual posts which contained supposed libels.)

Hmmm, read, delete and selectively edit thread so it's not libelous, or just delete the whole whacking great thing and spend the rest of my time playing City Of Heroes.

Which would you do?

Since there are no libellous comments in the thread, and one would have to have read it anyway to ascertain whether it WAS libellous, then the amount of time taken is the same either way.

I wouldnt play City Of Heroes for a start... Razz
In any case, I'm sure there is a disclaimer somewhere that expresses that only members are responsible for their comments, and GR cannot be held responsible. If thats the case, then there would be no need to do either.

Cream, please do expose the shameberg. It is your destiny!

You can't blame Mike though; he's only doing what he's 'probably' been told to.

Exactly, he was very good-humoured about it.

I picked up the newest issue of Play magazine today & the editor, Nick Jones, had this to say on the front page:
Quote:
EDITORIAL INTEGRITY
Two Words that mean the world to us here at PLAY and, hopefully, one of the main reasons you buy this magazine. But this is not a 'we're better than our competitors' column. No, we wouldn't be that childish. This is an attempt to explain to you, beloved reader, why we're in this job. We pride ourselves on the fact that we can't be bought, that we are independent (not just from Sony but from independent publishers as well) and that you rely on us to give impartial advice. It's an important and incredibly fortunate position to be in: we get to write about something we love & to tell others about it. How would you feel if a friend swindled you out of £40? Chances are you wouldn't talk to that person again.

That's how we'd feel, anyway. You may not agree with us on some things & hey, we even get it wrong from time to time. Hopefully though, you can trust us to come to a conclusion that is well-rounded & on the right side of objective. Even if we have personal preferences and where applicable we'll use this to our advantage - game types that we like will be reviewed by who we feel is the most appropriate. With PLAY it's always game first, opinion second. But with that said, two things are definitely true: if we don't cover a game in PLAY then the chances are that we don't think it's much cop. If there's no review score of said game then it definitely isn't.

Anyone want to swap to Paragon? Wink
