I picked up the newest issue of Play magazine today & the editor, Nick Jones, had this to say on the front page:

EDITORIAL INTEGRITY
Two Words that mean the world to us here at PLAY and, hopefully, one of the main reasons you buy this magazine. But this is not a 'we're better than our competitors' column. No, we wouldn't be that childish. This is an attempt to explain to you, beloved reader, why we're in this job. We pride ourselves on the fact that we can't be bought, that we are independent (not just from Sony but from independent publishers as well) and that you rely on us to give impartial advice. It's an important and incredibly fortunate position to be in: we get to write about something we love & to tell others about it. How would you feel if a friend swindled you out of £40? Chances are you wouldn't talk to that person again.
That's how we'd feel, anyway. You may not agree with us on some things & hey, we even get it wrong from time to time. Hopefully though, you can trust us to come to a conclusion that is well-rounded & on the right side of objective. Even if we have personal preferences and where applicable we'll use this to our advantage - game types that we like will be reviewed by who we feel is the most appropriate. With PLAY it's always game first, opinion second. But with that said, two things are definitely true: if we don't cover a game in PLAY then the chances are that we don't think it's much cop. If there's no review score of said game then it definitely isn't. |
Anyone want to swap to Paragon? |
Do you think that was directly related to the Driv3r saga, and basically a sly dig at Future without naming names?
What did they give Driv3r, by the way? _________________ Work for eight hours

Probably.
And they've only been given preview code. Next issue has the review. _________________ That's a disc drive. What's been in them you ask? Well:
PS2 - Smackdown HCTP, PSM2 disc 51.

Hmmm, read, delete and selectively edit thread so it's not libelous, or just delete the whole whacking great thing and spend the rest of my time playing City Of Heroes.
Which would you do? |
Since there are no libellous comments in the thread, and one would have to have read it anyway to ascertain whether it WAS libellous, then the amount of time taken is the same either way. |
The implication is that someone has already read the thread and/or decided it is libelous.
The question then becomes, how best to rid ourselves of potentially libelous material, and the lazy version is to just plain remove the whole thread.
EXCELLENT point tho SiRuS. I mean, rationally the thread shouldn't be deleted.
What's wrtong with City Of Heroes tho? Can't possibly be worse than Driv3r, can it |

Why stop there? Why not just delete the whole forum?
Libel is not the reason the thread was deleted. It's as simple as that. |

Stu, what's your view on the fact that a moderator has been demodded simply for quoting one of your posts and adding the words "Fair Play " underneath? _________________ Work for eight hours

Well.
None of this changes the valid allegation that Driv3r, given a three out of ten by edge and described in one word as "shoddy", was over scored by two of futures publications by an enormous margin. What was the reason for that?
I'm afraid "We were reviewing unfinished code and were promised the technical problems would be fixed" just doesn't cut the goddamn mustard. All of the chatter points to some incredibly heavy handed PR tactics from Atari. Allegations of bribery and corruption for the moment remain just that. Allegations. But the fact of the matter is that the damage has already been done. Why should anyone take anything they read in those two magazines seriously every again? (If they ever did before?) _________________ I came here to chew ass and kick bubblegum. And I'm all out of ass. |

the problem is what if people do continue to buy the magazines and the mags do live through this, it will happen again because obviously we simply aren't a loud enough voice. _________________ Campaigning for the Re-Modification of our Beloved Sprouty
