Some thoughts :
1. Reviews are subjective.. I hate
metroid, if I was a magazine reviewer i'd give it
4 out of 10 (mainly for technical achievement)..
but then all the fanboys would post about how i'm
rubbish, and my review is "wrong". It's just one
person opinion at the end of the day.
2.
Magazines are made appx 3 months before they
appear on the shelf.. Which is why they're
sometimes behind with news, etc. So therefor (to
my knowledge might be wrong here) nearly all
magazines review unfinished games which might be
buggy, etc.. but they have to take the publishers
word these issues will be fixed to hit schedules,
etc. This doesnt always happen, on a decent launch
schedule a finished game can be given to the
magazine guys.. but some publishers seem to (if
you're a conspiracy theorist) "hurry" games out
which arent particularly good so magazines have no
choice but to review unfished games, and just
presume bugs and glitches will be gone by the time
they're released.
3. Magazines are there
to make money, just like the games industry
itself. If I worked for a magazine and a large
publisher said, look.. we'll give you 10 full page
adverts for the next few months if you look at
this unfinished game and turn a blind eye to a few
of it's faults.. if you dont like the game, then
obviously it's not good enough to advertise and we
wont need the ads... I'm not saying that this
happens, but I can understand why it would...
Personally the ONLY reviews i trust are on
digitiser on ch4.. as they dont need to make money
off ads, etc.. Even websites make their money off
ads, and so need to appease publishers. Personally
I'll read a paper magazine on the bog, but never
take their word as gospel...
NOTE : Im not
saying that 2 or 3 actually happen.. just i can
understand ish if they
do. _________________ A Sega Fan could do

Never seen anything like
it! | Well I 'should' be playing it
right now but seeing as Royal Mail fancied it
first I'm going to have to wait for another copy.
Again. Makes you wonder how Internet & mail

Kieron Gillen
from PC Gamer made an interestingly obvious but
completely overlooked point on rllmuk.

...if a publisher considers the

finished code too. All bugs present are
bugs. |
If XBM and PSM2 are operating
above-board, then they really shouldn't have been
caught out on that one. There's no way that any
crippling bugs, glitches and general crapness
could be ironed out from the publishing of review
code and the game going gold. Do you really see
Atari delaying the game for tweaking, thereby
wasting millions of pounds of money cancelling
marketing and getting it reprinted with the
updated release date?
This is why I can't
believe Future's magazines weren't paid
off. | |

Of that there's no doubt. But

I am, and anyone who
suggests NGC takes bribes is insulting me and my
teammates (I realise you aren't doing that, Pell).
Hell, it'd make everyone's job a lot easier - no
need to play those pesky games, no need to work
late to make a good mag, just whack a score in at
the end.
I've never worked on a games mag
where anyone has taken bribes. In fact, last
Christmas a big games company sent very expensive
gifts to a lot of the reviewers here, and every
single on of them was sent back, in line with
company policy about not taking gifts, noy
accepting corporate hospitality worth over a
certain amount and so on.
Disagree with
reviews, say the reviewer doesn't know what he's
talking about, pick up any points you like. But
don't accuse us of taking bribes. We don't. End of
story. (Cue someone calling me a liar ) | |

Hmmm, except that I know
someone who was working as an Assistant Editor on
one of Future's Carp fishing magazines and I've
seen with my own eyes the small back room at his
home stuffed
full of goodies he was sent by
manufacturers getting reviews, etc, in the
magazine. In his own words he 'hasn't bought any
new kit for years'. Doesn't sit well with Future's
'company policy', does it?

How did we get
onto MK:DD? I had no problem with NGC's review of
that at all, it was a fairly written, honest
review. Anyone who says they didn't have loads of
fun in multiplayer hasn't got very good mates!
The point about the exclusive Driv3r
reviews is that they're hopelessly inaccurate.
Practically nobody thinks that the game is
actually worth 90%, including nearly all the
people who have the game and like it despite its
flaws. _________________ Humiliate John Rodney Bennett

bollocks.
Read Gamespot. Read IGN. Read
Eurogamer. Everything they bring up is not
mentioned, in any detail, in those magazines.

Fair enough.
But to suggest a magazine such as NGC with
it's rich back ground is just wrong...
I
haven't been unsatisfied with any of their
reviews. _________________ Less spilling -
