I can't remember if I asked for The Back Page on arriving at AP, or whether it was suggested I do it (though Cam did reveal he was fed up with trying to think of something new and everyone hating it regardless, so it was probably that no one else wanted it) but it was clearly a Good Thing.
Except for Sue, who came to dread my monthly armed-with-a-sketch sidle towards her desk and would attempt to look interested as I explained about large photographs of Mr Pastry and the importance of finding 1912 typefaces, though would inevitably get it exactly right and make it all look marvellous.
And JD, who wearied of it being the last thing written.
And Steve (and, later, Martin), who found it even more difficult than usual to sub without my springing up and demanding a legally-enforceable explanation.
And the readers, who hated the entire run anyway.
But I liked doing them. Nyer.
Come with me now as I point out how great they were and thus make myself look lovely.
"Self-indlugence? I can spell it any way I please."
