This page contains a selection of emulators for use on the Xbox console. To use them, you will need to have a modified Xbox. For more information on modifying your Xbox, visit www.xbox-scene.com. This is not a fully comprehensive list of emus available for the Xbox, this represents a selection of the ones I've personally used and recommend. For a more complete and up-to-date list, visit #xbins on IRC (EFNet) and for more information visit Xport, the homepage of the author of most of these emulators.

Last update on this page: 24 June 2004 - most emus updated, several added.
Also introduced "Other files" section for non-emulated freeware games etc.

ARCADE

MAMEoX (v84b3)
Excellent port of the great emulator. Happily runs the vast majority of MAME games at full speed, though a few larger titles (eg Metal Slug 3 and 4) are currently too big to fit in the Xbox's memory. However...

KAWA-X (v0.11)
...this emu runs most of the ones MAME can't handle, via the use of virtual memory. You may need, however, to rename the Kawa-X executable (from DEFAULT.XBE to KAWAX.XBE, for example), put it in the MAME directory and run it via boXplorer if you want it to be able to detect the ROMs (which should be put in your MAME ROMs folder).

APPLE IIe/GS

Kegs-X (v1)
Very good emu for the ancient Apple systems. Be sure to read the readme file and follow its instructions before running, or your disks won't boot.

ATARI 2600 VCS

Z26 (v4)
I found this vastly more useable than Stella, the other Xbox VCS emulator. Shares the same excellent front end as XboyAdvance, NeoGenesis, Hugo etc.

ATARI 800/XL/5200

AtariXLBox (v5)
Looks good, but most 5200 games don't seem to recognise the Start button. EDIT: Ah, right. In order to get the games to start, you should press the left analogue stick in, which will bring up a keyboard on screen. If you then press "H" on that keyboard, most games will start. (Very occasionally it's another button, such as "N".)

ATARI LYNX

LynxBox (v1)
Really nice emu that seems to run everything well.

ATARI ST

WinSTonX (v5)
Updated with new and improved interface. Excellent emulation.

BANDAI WONDERSWAN

WonderswanX (v2)
Handheld emu, haven't actually tried this one myself yet.

COLECOVISION

Adam-X (v1)
A huge improvement on the previous Coleco emulator. Runs Colecovision carts and Adam disks.

COMMODORE AMIGA

WINUAEX (v2)
Easier to use than UAEX, this is a really good port of the classic Amiga emu, better in several respects than the PC version.

GAME BOY ADVANCE/GAME BOY/COLOR/SUPER GAMEBOY

XboyAdvance (v10)
Excellent emu, runs at full speed with a small amount of frameskip. Supports Super Gameboy enhancements.

INTELLIVISION

Bliss (v5)
Updated interface, much improved.

NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM (NES)

FCE-Ultra (v16)
A lot friendlier to use than NESterX. Runs FDS disk images as well as ordinary NES carts.

MAGNAVOX ODYSSEY2

OdysseyX (v1)
Another good solid emu from Xport for the VCS-era console.

MSX

FMSXbox (v4)
Much-improved interface over v2, now an excellent emu. Runs both MSX1 and MSX2 games.

NEO-GEO POCKET/COLOR

NeoPopX (v3)
Very good emulator with sound, and the same clear, friendly front-end as many others.

PC ENGINE/TURBO GRAFX

Hugo (v10)
Superb emulation, adjustable screen and great compatibility. Runs CD games as well as HuCards. (Only original CDs, though. If you have backup discs, you'll have to rip those to the hard drive. A tool to do this (CDDISSECT) is included in the Hugo zipfile.)

SEGA MASTER SYSTEM

SMSPlusX (v9)
Another very compatible, very user-friendly emulator with screen adjust options.

SEGA MEGADRIVE (aka GENESIS)/MEGA CD/32X

NeoGenesis (v16)
This is a superb emulator, highly configurable and very compatible.

SEGA SG-1000

SC-3X (v005)
Decent emulation for this obscure pre-Master-System console, but lack of screen adjustment options lets it down badly.

SHARP X68000

X68000X (v1)
Very easy-to-use emu for the normally-complicated Japanese computer, home to some rare arcade games.

SONY PLAYSTATION

PCSXBOX (v11)
Very decent PS emu, runs a large percentage of games at full speed with barely-noticeable frameskip.

SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM (SNES)

SNES9X X (v0.23)
By far the best of the two SNES emus currently available, though it lacks screen adjustment options.

OTHER FILES

rRootage (v1.0)
Superb abstract freeware shoot-'em-up.

noiz2sa (v1.1)
Another superb abstract freeware shoot-'em-up.
