I want you to shut up. Unfortunately, neither will happen.

Certain people ought to stop being so niaive and learn a thing or two about the law. Remember, there are always two sides to every story.

What was written could quite easily be made to seem libellous by a team of highly trained lawyers, which is why he's been de-modded. If the situation blows over he may well be reinstated. Who knows?

Either way, there's no way Future could risk having Sprouty remain in a 'position of authority' and did what was essentially the right thing. I'm sure this has been explained to him in detail by Will, and it will have been explained to all relevant parties on a 'need to know' basis.

And anyway, so what if he's been de-modded. He's still a member, right?

The thing is, it hasn't been explained in detail. That brief PM was all he had, and was demodded before he even had a chance to reply.

I know it's been said over and over, but all Sprouty did was quote someone saying "fair play." I'm don't exactly know anything about the person it was directed at, but...

SillySprout elsewhere wrote:
For those that dont know, Rev Stuart Cambell was one of the guys who ran the "Fair play campain", which started from a thread on the Edge forums last year. I didn't actually agree with what he was saying, but wrote Fair play in a "Hi, Mr Fair Play" way.

Do any of you honestly believe that Sprouty would start making jibes at anyone, let alone a Future journalist? Think about it; it's just not what he does. He tried to explain himself in this very forum, but Will deleted the thread within about 15 minutes. Why? Who knows. That's the thing he's most annoyed about, and why he hasn't been on since.

*Points to sig*

I'm not really pleased about not being briefed by an Admin about what happened. As far as I know, none of us were.

We were pretty much left to try and bring order to the forum without knowing more than anyone else did. Hardly helpful when there's topics popping up everywhere asking what is going on. Then there's the stupid sh*t that came from the fingers of some members who really couldn't care less what they were doing.

Deleting SillySprout's topic probably was the cause of all this. If it had remained there'd have been far less topics, an explanation for members to digest and a place to reason for information. Instead we were all left in the dark.

The same sort of thing happened when mhtl was banned IIRC. Now it's happened again, no-one appears to have learnt any lessons.

I have no idea what is going on, so I'm going to stay quiet on this one. If someone could PM me the details, I'd be much obliged... I've kinda been away for a couple of weeks (seems you lot can't get by without me... Wink).

I've come to this late and I'm very surprised to see that this has happened. Yikes!

I saw the offending thread by accident this morning - around 8am today we had a new user with an interesting name on the boards. He had a post count of 2, so out of curiosity I checked his previous post. It was (I think) in the Driv3r thead, where he'd written simply "X is a liar."

Sprouty had quoted that post and applied the comment "fair play."

There's a very big defamation problem there. Without qualification, the statement "X is a liar" will clearly tend to lessen people's opinion of X. Especially if X works in the games industry, then a comment like that in a forum devoted to discussing games will magnify the problem.

Now, under the law, very many people involved in the publication of a defamatory statement can get into trouble. If X was defamed, then Future could be classed as a publisher of that statement. There's especially a problem if one of Future's 'watchdogs' - ie, the moderator team - is seen to be endorsing what may be a defamatory statement.

So, in return for Sprouty materially increasing the risk the X could successfully sue Future - an easier target than one of the forum's (relatively anonymous) users - I guess that Future has figured that it has to take action against him, and to be seen to take action.

Sad to say, if I were one of Future's lawyers I'd advise them to do exactly what they've done.

But I'm very, very sorry to see Sprouty be de-modded. He was one of the greats.

edit: typo

Lawyers? It's just a forum. Really. Nothing more than a few geeks giving there opinion about stuff. Relax everyone.

As a user of the forum, part of me wishes you were right, Herr G. But there's no 'it's just a forum where geeks hang out' defence available under the law, I'm afraid.

Your reputation can be trashed here on the forum just as effectively as in a newspaper, or by a group e-mail, or by a statement made from the stage in a big conference hall. And you would be entitled to protect that reputation irrespective of where the defamation occurred. Which is as it should be, no?

In two posts you've said everything I've been wanting to say, in a manner more concise and clear than I could ever have dreamed of.

My hat is well and truly off to you sir.
